Due to training as a home inspector, and with much experience, I was able to closely examine this deck and deemed it as being unsafe. Being my in-law’s deck, I was deeply concerned for their safety. The deck was almost entirely nailed instead of screwed in full sun. Many of the decking boards were split over the floor joists without the joist being doubled. Some of those end joints rotted, making it possible for anyone to fall through the deck. While I was taking the deck apart, I found several bats living in cavities inside the deck. They flew off to find a home elsewhere.
